About

Blue Hibiscus (블루 히비스커스) is an illegal substance.[1] In the past it was used as a sleeping drug to turn the En Piste dormant, but nowadays it is strictly banned even for medical use.[2][3]

Smelling the scent paralyzes the whole body.[4] Blue Hibiscus is dangerous because it infiltrates into En Piste just by being inhaled. The substance is highly addictive and the addiction from it can hardly be cured.[5] Prolonged exposure to it leads to death[3] and having more than 2% of Blue Hibiscus in one's system can also be lethal.[6]

Blue Hibiscus based pills were used in Heath's experiment on That Miracle of Synodic Month[3] and later on to drug Hiasen to remove his En Piste. They have a sweet taste.[7]

Ran's Medication for En Piste Confusion[]

Ran used Blue Hibiscus to create a new treatment method for En Piste Confusion in the Denial arc, after his fight with Psychi and Hellfire. En Piste Confusion happens due to overstraining one's En Piste, and stress. As a consequence, the immune system is confused and attacks the En Piste every time one uses magic. Ran's plan was to use the confusion of the immune cells to his advantage and confuse them even more with Blue Hibiscus by blinding them and thus making them unable to identify his En Piste as the source of his magic. This way his En Piste would be safe, could revive and then heal, but some other parts of his body would be attacked by the immune system instead. He decided to add a command to the spell to make his cells think, his Mana is coming from his left eye. Ran also included his disguise spell in this.[8]

One dose of the medicine only lasts for 4 hours and the use of magic is still limited. The dosage is set like this to avoid taking a lethal amount of Blue Hibiscus.[8] The short time frame also means that the spells included in the treatment (redirection to the left eye, disguise) become undone during sleep, so that Ran had to wake up every 4 hours before the pills wore off.[9] The medicine takes effect immediately, making the patient feel better, however, after a while thirst will begin and the patient will rely on the drug like an addict.[6]

It's the first treatment method for En Piste Confusion and Ran tested it on himself.[6] He didn't tell Ten about it and when Ran collapsed because of a side effect of Blue Hibiscus, Ten confiscated the medicine.[10]

Medicine that Stops Death

The medicine that stops death (also referred to as the medicine of immortality) played a huge role in the death of Senika and Ten's team 16 years prior to the La Lune arc.

Mick's good acquaintance, if not friend, for some reason had dropped it on a street (or lost it), where Mick found it. The bottle had "Senika Rue Aideline" written on it. Mick couldn't ignore it, because he recognized the handwriting, so he picked it up with the goal to deliver it to Trump of Honor HQ on February 4. But on another account, he said, that somebody asked him to deliver it. Mick didn't know what was in the bottle. He gave it to Ten to keep it safe.[11]

Funoire was looking for that medicine[12] and she somehow knew that the medicine was with this Yeohadan team, that's why she asked all of them to come to Sia's house, even explicitly making sure that everyone arrived. She also knew that there were six officers in the team as she noticed that Ten was missing when the team arrived.*[13] Funoire was so determined to get her hands of on the medicine that she killed - in a sense - the whole team and Sia, who got in her way,[12][14] but Ten was revived with the medicine that stops death,[15] as Funoire was ultimately not able to attain it.[16]

The Captain was the first to get to the crime scene (not the officers of the Dania department).[17] He picked up the medicine and the note with Senika's name before the other officers arrived[6] and later used the medicine on Ten.[16][15] Senika died the day after, not receiving the medicine that was meant for her.

*Note:
Ten was waiting upstairs while the rest of the team was in the basement. However, it is also possible that Funoire did not know the exact number of teammates in advance but only found out by controlling Mick's body (and mind). Then again, if she could read his mind to access this kind of information, it wouldn't have made sense for her to take so long to find out that Ten was the one holding onto the medicine, because Mick gave it to him and thus knew where it was.

Trivia

  1. Hiasen compares the smell with burning incense[4] and describes it as sweet.[18]
  2. Hiasen is said to have a natural tolerance to it,[5] but later on Ran assumes Hiasen's tolerance to it is a result of Ran and Senika being exposed to Blue Hibiscus in their childhood during Heath's experiment on That Miracle of Synodic Month. Otherwise, it wouldn't make sense for Hiasen to be affected by a drug he never had himself.[3]
  3. When Ran received a Blue Hibiscus flower from Jewby to create his medicine, he tried eating a raw petal right away. Jewby said that was an obnoxious thing to do, but Ran thought Blue Hibiscus would make a fine pudding.[6]
